Appropriateness of Urban Public Spaces for Veterans and Handicaps; Case Study of Lorestan Province

Aims: Belonged to all the citizens, the urban environment is not restricted to the physical aspects, and actually becomes worthy by the human presence and activities. The aim of the study was to investigate the adaptation of public urban environment for the veterans and disabled persons in Lorestan Province.

Instrument & Methods: In the analytic-descriptive study, 384 veterans and disabled persons were studied in Khorramabad, Borujerd, and Koohdasht in Lorestan Province in 2014. The subjects were selected via available method. Data was collected by a researcher-made questionnaire and by VIKOR technique to investigate the adaptation parameters of the public urban environment. Data was analyzed by SPSS 21 software using Pearson correlation coefficient test.

Findings: Noticing the adaptation prameters, the Lorestan Welfare Bureau Bilding in Khorramabad, the Welfare Bureau Bilding in Borujerd, and the Education Department Bulding in Koohdasht were in good conditions. The adaptation of the urban public environment based on the VIKOR index and the viewpoints of the veterans and disabled persons were significantly and positively correlated in the following aspects: the accessibility and commute problems of the spaces; lack of safty and comfort in the spaces; lack of veterans and disabled persons’ participation in different urban activities; the implementation of the regulations concerning the adaptation of the public urban spaces for the veterans and disabled persons; and the accessibility and adaptation of the space facilities.

Conclusion: Noticing the accessibility and availability, the public urban environment in Lorestan Province is moderately adapted for the veterans and disabled persons.
